Evolver

Evolver is a mesmerising journey through the fundamental rhythms that underpin life on earth. The experience, confronts our fear of death, carrying us on a stream of matter from the human form into plant kingdom. This project defies boundaries, a musical journey sitting somewhere between breathing meditation, scientific exploration and psychedelic experience. With the voice of Cate Blanchett, Evolver is an MLF experience executive produced by Terrence Malick and Atlas V.

Story

It on January 13th 2018, 1.4m people across Hawai’i received an SMS from the state’s Emergency Management Agency: BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
In the minutes that followed, they were forced to confront existential questions that had been unthinkable just moments before: where could they go for shelter? What would remain of their communities if they survived a nuclear blast? How could they explain to their children why we live in a world where such unimaginable destruction was possible? And how could their own Government continue to pursue nuclear policies that threaten the entire global population every day?

By the time FEMA managed to retract the incorrect warning message, it was too late to pretend that normality would resume. Their collective experience had laid bare the growing threat that nuclear weapons pose to the world. In the words of Kauai resident Cynthia Lazaroff, ‘Nothing happened, but everything changed’.

Creators Statement

If you could explore yourself, you would discover that just under your skin you are a branching being made of rivers, whirlpools and ripples in the tides of existence. The world flows into you and you flow into the world. The atmosphere is a co-creation of all breathing bodies, threading us together as cells within the body of the earth.

EVOLVER observes the movement of oxygen through the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, the experience is formed from a collage of different scientific datasets and blood flow simulations and informed by our close collaborations with leading scientists. From an inbreath all the way to cellular diffusion, Evolver aims to challenge the myth of separation by inviting audiences to voyage beneath the sensorial boundary of skin, to make visible our inner branching being. By journeying inwards and exploring the beauty and mystery of human beings, and just how inseparable the outside world becomes from our ecosystems within, we hope to awaken the realisation that we are nature, and what we do to nature we do to ourselves.

Behind the scene

Marshmallow Laser Feast

Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF) is an experiential art collective, their work reinterprets the idea of human perception and experience. Employing a wealth of creative disciplines and underpinned by research, inviting participants to navigate with a sensory perception beyond the everyday.

In collaboration with artists, scientists, musicians, poets, programmers, engineers and many more makers, MLF has been leaving a slug trail of sensory experiences as they journey through the cosmos. Fusing architectural tools, contemporary imaging techniques and performance with tactile forms, they sculpt spaces that lay dormant until animated by playful investigation.
