Goodbye Mister Octopus is an illuminating coming of age story about the questioning of identity, of what our loved ones represent, and the perception of those around us.
It on January 13th 2018, 1.4m people across Hawai’i received an SMS from the state’s Emergency Management Agency: BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
In the minutes that followed, they were forced to confront existential questions that had been unthinkable just moments before: where could they go for shelter? What would remain of their communities if they survived a nuclear blast? How could they explain to their children why we live in a world where such unimaginable destruction was possible? And how could their own Government continue to pursue nuclear policies that threaten the entire global population every day?
By the time FEMA managed to retract the incorrect warning message, it was too late to pretend that normality would resume. Their collective experience had laid bare the growing threat that nuclear weapons pose to the world. In the words of Kauai resident Cynthia Lazaroff, ‘Nothing happened, but everything changed’.
Through Stella’s story, I wanted to develop our relationship with family to shed light on our identity. Our perception of our surroundings is biased by what each person wants to show.Regarding the storytelling aspect, the audience’s journey will evolve from Stella’s teenager conflictual relationship with her father, the understanding of her parents, to the new emotional dimension she sets her family in. This is how Stella will grow up learning the reality of the relationship between her parents. The experience is a linear story, with a graphic evolution of perceptions, which can be found in the changes of appearance of the characters. The scenes described in the letter, mirror of Stella’s perception, have a spatial scale and a different perception than the reality of the present.
Amaury is a motion designer specialized in 2D and animated virtual reality. He is the founder of Studio Geppetto. After training as a telecommunications engineer specialized in Audiovisual and Multimedia Projects at Télécom Sud-Paris, he then immersed himself in the world of animation, making Snowball, the first short film in traditional animation with spatialized sound in 360 video. Amaury creates in the tradition where the idea, the movement and the design (sound and visual) are as important as listening, flexibility and collaboration.
JORGE TERESO is a director & digital artist from Buenos aires. His work ranges from playful and lysergic animations to realistic VR experiences and interactive installations. He’s a partner at 3dar studios, where he created its first award winning short film, Shave It (2013).
Since then he’s been creating 3dar’s original content, always in search of new ways to expand the possibilities of animation.
